Hemis monastery is believed to be the wealthiest monastery in Leh, it is also the biggest gompa in Leh. The monatery is believed to have been in existence since the 11 th century however the reconstruction of the monastery as don in 1672. Hemis monastery belongs to the Dugpa order and follows the tantric vajrayana teachings and the monks perform tantric worship.
Hemis monastery is located approximately 50 kms from leh on the west banks of indus river near Karu. The Hemis Monastery hosts an annual festival, during which the sacred mask dance is performed.
