Reaching the Stongdey monastery can be bit tiring since you need to trek uphill for about four hours. However, once atop, you will completely enjoy the spectacular scenery of the valley around.
Established in 1052 by Lama Marpa Lotsawa Stongdey monatery is amongst the oldest monateries in the Zanskar region. It is the second largest monastery in Zanskar, with a community of about 60 Gelukpa monks 18 kms from Padum.
There are seven temples in Stongdey monastery complex. The Tshogs-khang is decorated with exquisite paintings including some with deities on a black background outlined in gold. The Gustor Festival is held on the 28th and 29th day in the eleventh month of the Tibetan calendar in Stongdey monastery.
