Tso Moriri lake in Changthang region of Ladakh is a beautiful high altitude lake in Leh Ladakh which infact is the largest high altitude lake in India that is entirely in Indian Territory. One cannot pitch tents near the banks of Tso Moriri as it is part of the wetland conservation reserve.
Carry enough petrol for return journey from Tso Moriri since there are no petrol pumps enroute.
Tso Moriri - A High Altitude Alpine lake
Picturesquely located in secluded, breathtakingly beautiful Rupshu Valley, the high-altitude Tso Moriri Lake is less than 250 kilometers southeast of Leh.
Flanked by lofty mountains, this serene lake is about 4,000 meters above sea level. Tso Moriri is approximately 29 kilometers long and up to 8 kilometers wide. Tso Moriri attracts a range of wildlife, including migratory birds, marmots and rarely the Tibetan wolves.
Chumathang pateau located on the way to Tso Moriri is famous for the boiling hot sulphur springs by the icy cold Indus river. The Chumathang hotsprings like other hot springs is also considered curative in nature!
Tso Moriri - Tso Kar Circuit
If you are driving up from Manali you can visit Tso Moriri on the way to Leh. Indian nationals do not need a permit to visit Tso Moriri or to do Tso Kar circuit.
Located at a high altitude of about 4500 meters Tso Kar is a high altitude alpine lake around fifty kilometers from Tso Moriri. Tso Kar is the smallest of the three alpine lakes in Leh Ladakh. Tso Kar is surrounded by marsh lands that host amazing bird life making it popular amongst bird watchers. black-necked cranes, bar-headed geese and great crested grebe are the major attraction at Tso Kar.
Of the Drukpa Lineage the highly revered Korzok monastery is located on the western banks of Tso Moriri. Perched atop a hill the Korzok monatery at an altitude of about 4,595 metres houses a Shakyamuni Buddha amongst other statues. The Korzok Gu-stor festival is held at the monastery which attract many. Campsites are set up down the hill near the monastery during summers.
Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri
One can visit Tso Moriri from Pangong Tso with out returning to Leh if one wishes to and exit Ladakh via Manali – Leh Highway after visiting Tso Moriri. Tso Moriri is about 380 kms from Pangong Tso and it will approx take about 9 hrs to reach Korzok from Pangong Tso via the Pangong lake road.
Rumtse to Tso Moriri
Rumtse to Tso Moriri is a trekking trail which would give one a chance to experience the beauty of Rupshu Valley to a great extend. Rumtse to Tso Moriri will take one through Kyamar, Tisaling Nuruchan and Korzok village on the way.
